Wim van Brakel holds a medical degree from Amsterdam University, a Diploma in Missiology, All Nations Christian College, UK, an MSc in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a PhD in neuro-epidemiology from Utrecht University.

Dr. van Brakel has worked for 17 years in Nepal and India for the International Nepal Fellowship and The Leprosy Mission International, specializing in leprosy control, public health, prevention of disabilities, rehabilitation and research. He was a founding member of IDEA Nepal, a DPO of leprosy-affected people, and has a strong interest in the participation of persons affected by leprosy in leprosy services. He was a member of the WHO task force that produced the first guidelines on this topic.

Dr. van Brakel worked at the Royal Tropic Institute, Amsterdam, as Senior Adviser Public Health from 2003 to February 2014. During this time, he was seconded to Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR).He now works as Senior Technical Consultant and Research Coordinator for NLR. He also works part-time with the Disability Studies unit at the VUmc Amsterdam. His research interests include peripheral neuropathy in leprosy, leprosy-relateddisability and rehabilitation, social participation and inclusion, stigma,disability-inclusive development and measurement of disability. He has published over 80 papers and book chapters in peer-reviewed international journals.Dr. van Brakel serves on the Editorial Board of ‘Disability, CBR and Inclusive Development’, is a board member of the Dutch Coalition of Disability and Development and is Coordinator of Morbidity Management and Disability Working Group of the NTD NGDO Network (NNN).
